Kyoto Obakusan Manpukuji Fundraising Initiative: "Commemorating the 350th Anniversary of Master Ingen’s Passing in 2022"
Kyoto Obakusan Manpukuji is located in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture. Built in 1661, it spans 200,000 square meters and is a Buddhist temple supported by the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period. It was founded by Master Ingen, a high-ranking monk from Fujian, China, who traveled to Japan. For over 100 years (until 1784), the temple was predominantly led by Chinese monks, with 21 generations of abbots being monks who came from China。
Carrying on a long-standing tradition, the Kyoto Overseas Chinese Association now serves as the supporting organization for Manpukuji. Every year during the Obon Festival (Zhongyuan Festival), the Chinese community holds ancestor worship ceremonies at the temple. The cemetery on the mountain behind the temple mostly belongs to overseas Chinese and is managed by the Kyoto Overseas Chinese Association. Kyoto Obakusan Manpukuji is one of the few remaining Tang-style temples in Japan. It currently houses 23 main buildings, along with corridors, plaques, and couplets, all of which are designated as Japanese national treasures。
Manpukuji was planned and constructed under the guidance of Master Ingen. He is regarded as a great monk, following Tang Dynasty Master Jianzhen, who traveled to Japan and profoundly influenced the country. Master Ingen not only spread Buddhism but also introduced advanced Chinese culture and scientific knowledge of the time, significantly impacting the economic and social development of Japan during the Edo period。
In 2015, President Xi Jinping mentioned during his meeting with a Japanese delegation of 3,000 members led by Toshihiro Nikai, Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party, “When I worked in Fujian, I was already familiar with the story of Master Ingen traveling to Japan in the 17th century.”
Due to Master Ingen’s tremendous contributions to Japanese culture, he was bestowed the title of National Teacher by the Imperial Family before his passing, with additional honors conferred every 50 years thereafter. In 2022, marking the 350th anniversary of Master Ingen’s passing, Emperor Reiwa will traditionally confer a new title upon Master Ingen as a gesture of respect。
On the occasion of the 350th anniversary of Master Ingen’s passing in 2022, Kyoto Obakusan Manpukuji Temple is conducting a fundraising campaign for the restoration of the temple. We sincerely hope that all Chinese compatriots will contribute with joy and generosity. The names of all donors and sponsoring companies will be inscribed on a plaque for public recognition and preservation. The Sino-Japanese Huangbo Cultural Promotion Association will join forces with various Chinese organizations to contribute to the restoration of the Buddhist halls at Kyoto Obakusan Manpukuji Temple。
